I looked back a ways here but didn't see a thread listing that seemed to cover this, sorry if I'm duplicating something.

I'm an idiot when it comes to understanding how a lot of this stuff works...I think pretty much everything I've ever download had the subs already connected? to the show I had downloaded...but now I've got one I'm getting ready to download that is "soft subbed" (and has hlspit to boot, which I've never used though the instructions look simple enough even for my silly self) So I'm not sure how to get this to work.
I've been stuck on download d gray man (finally finished it!) and am now jumping to download Attic Cat (A K drama I requested and Cireus so graciously filled much faster than I expected!) I've seen it on azn network long ago and loved it...but I'm not sure how to get it to work once I do get it all downloaded (I am on satellite and have a very slow downlaod and can only download from 2am to 5 am each morning. booo)

So, I'm going to download them into a directorty called attic cat, and some epis' are hjsplit so they will get thier own sub directories in the directory so I can use hjsplit to put them together.....how the heck do I get the softsubs to work? I'm using media player classic with....I think it's called the k lite codec pack? If I unzip the subs into the same folder all of attic cat is in (once I've joined the hjsplit ones, hopefully) will they just automatically load or do I need another program like hjsplit to put the right subtitling with the right episode?

I appreciate any help I can get, everyone here has been so patient with my brain damaged self in explaining things, I love this site and have totally pimped you to my friends :) It's going to take me a while to download these eps, so there's no huge rush in explaining it...just if someone gets a chance and can break it down to ".....for dummies" level I would appreciate it.

Thank you!!

You don't have to put pieces (.001 etc) files into their own folders as long as the parts are all in the same folder (as in, if an ep is divided into, say, three parts, then all three parts must be in the same folder), but you don't have to make a new directory for them unless you want to.

As for softsubs, you may have to rename them. The name of the video file and the subtitle file MUST be the same for the video player program to recognize them. Also, the subtitle files MUST be in the same folder as your videos. Otherwise, they should load automatically when you start the episode in your video player. If, by chance, they don't show up, verify that you've renamed the subtitles correctly and restart the video. If that doesn't do it, try right clicking on the playback screen and select your subtitle stream there.

thank you for the explanation! I've still got about 4 days of downloading to get them all (oh how I hate satellite and having no other provider, I think even dial up would work better, but our phones lines here are crap.) so I will have to wait and see if I can get it to work. Hopefully it will be as much of a snap as hj split was! Oh if only everything were so easy!
