knowing other languages is great because if we know other languages we can talk with people of other countries with no effort...
when we go to another place that we don't know, we have to talk with other persons so we have to know other languages...
*put here the languages you talk and if you have already spoken that languages with other persons...*
well, i will begin...
i speak English, French, Portuguese(my real language), Spanish, some phrases and expressions in German and some words in Japanese...
i have already spoken French, English, Portuguese of corse and Spanish...
My country have a lot of foreigners so we have to speak a lot of languages...

Aside from my native language (German) I can only speak English. I've learned French in school for several years, but I've forgotten most of it by now. I know the meanings of some japanese words from reading fanfiction and watching anime, but that's it.
I think it is cool, that you can speak so many different languages neji.

Same here. It's great to know many languages.
I'm Spanish fluent, my English is good IMO, and I try to memorize Japanese characters when I read, but that's about it ^^

Let's see...English, Mandarin, French, a bit of Japanese (well duh), and a tidbit of Latin. Personally, I'd like to learn the entirety of Japanese and Latin. Why? I don't know. But it just seems fun!

I speak Korean and English fluently; I can somewhat carry on a Japanese conversation~ I've taken Spanish for 4 years, but haven't used it much so I'm REALLY rusty in that area.. Let see.. ah, I'm learning Cantonese and Mandrin (for business) and continue to study Japanese~ I really like Japanese language and culture; so vibrant to me ^^;; ..learning different languages are so much fun!!

Let's see: German (native language), English (since primary school), French and Spanish in Highschool, and Japanese since 2001 (University). ^^ The only languages I speak fluently next to German, are English and Japanese, but I didn't use French and Spanish since graduation very often.

The main problem I would have with that many languages is that I most likely would start to confuse the words. I remember when I learned french in school, more often than not I knew the german and the english word, but the french one I could not remember. Does anyone else have this problem, too? Especially you gaidin, since you have quite a few languages that you speak.

Haha yeah Ultima, sometimes I get confused and blurt out words in the wrong language. It gets really weird when I confuse languages that IMO don't resemble each other at all (for example Italian and Russian). For some reason I’m always struggling with German and Swedish…If I have to use both on the same day, at some point I confuse the vocabulary for sure.
Oh and Dragon Blood I tried to look up the type of sign language I’ll be studying but it wasn’t mentioned. Just that it’ll be Finnish. And about the Chinese yeah I’ve heard it’s hard to pronounce, so thanks, I’ll need luck lol!
I really love foreign languages and whenever I have the opportunity to start to learn a new one, I go for it. I'm aiming to eventually speak at least 28 languages fluently (I made a bet on it haha). I'm studying to become an interpreter ^^
Neji I'm no genius (thank you though!!!), all my talent is just overly specific. I'm rubbish at math lol.

Is it true...that Japanese is very hard to learn?
Yes and no. The first 2 or 3 weeks were easy with learning Hiragana, Katakana and the first Kanji, but after a while there was a certain limit understanding the grammar. I mean it hits you out of nowhere, like an earthquake... here it is, but I was my experience and maybe other people haven't had it so hard. I don't like grammar very much, and I suck at logical understanding, so for me it's harder to understand certain phrases. I never had to learn for a language this hard, but it wasn't Kanji, they are easy, but the grammar is really bad.
You have different grammar with the same meaning, but when you have to use it, is so difficult. There are such tiny nuances and if you make a mistake, maybe it is offending.
My teachers said, that we would learn the whole basics within a year, but I had to learn about 2,5 ys. only to understand the "basics". I'm not the hardcore learning type, so for me was difficult :why:
But once you manage to learn it, you are soooo proud of the fact, that you did it. It's a good feeling and a good experience. :pile:

I learned them through TV and other such stuff. Because I'm weird and can't learn the proper way. 8D

I speak English and Spanish fluently, and I can carry simple conversations in Japanese, but I'm improving since it's what I'm studying at the moment^^
Now I have a question for you multy-language speakers. In my case, I can carry conversations in Japanese, nothing too deep or about topics which my vocabulary is not too profound, but I find it that I can understand A LOT more than I actually speak. It happened when I was learning English as well (Spanish is my native tongue) Has this happened to you guys as well, or am I just weird?

German & Korean fluently, English kinda... good and Japanese & French in an understandable way X_X'
I should be able to speak Japanese better, since I have relatives there, but we all speak english (my cousins) and I refuse to speak japanese with them, ever since one of my cousins laughed at my "gajin" way of speaking/spelling words~

You're normal or we are both weird! :D
My native tongue is French and I know English. I can read/listen to English without problems but I don't practise my speaking English enough. Like I always say: My signing English is better than my speaking it! :p But give my something to read/listen for a couple of minutes and I will be able to converse in English (though my verbs would needs a refresh, it's been more than 10 years since I finished school.)
And Japanese through the anime like most of every one here! :p InuYasha has some Japanese words that comes handy like kuso, teme... When I find someone who knows their meaning, we can then talk about anime! ;)

I know how that feels. Whenever I visit my family in Germany, it takes me a while to get the hang of the slang so for the first few weeks I stumble over my words and phrases, but my family understands that I'm flipping a switch in my brain from English to German. ^^

i was born speaking English. :3 i used to be semi-fluent in Latin but not anymore!- since i moved to a different school and all. i'm not fluent in Spanish or Japanese but I know enough to get around town or to help tourists, etc.
Learning foreign languages are awesome, and it also comes in handy when you're out in public somewhere and people are talking about you and you understand! :)
Anyway, I speak Cantonese at home (not too well though :s), I learned Mandarin for 14 years at chinese school, but I've stopped for 3 and I've basically lost it :(. I can also speak English since I'm Australian-born... I learned Indonesian for a few years in primary school, and used to speak another dialect of Chinese (that I can't spell) when I was younger but am restricted to a few phrases. And I can kind of speak Khmer but I struggle with that ^^".
I can also say a few phrases in Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean but not enough to hold a conversation with anyone. I'd love to learn Japanese though, it'd be so great to not have to rely on subs.
Oh! Haha, I can sing a song in Latin and a few phrases in Latin... the song being my high school song *grins*
Yap, learning foreign language is awesome. I'm intending to learn japanese seriously when I'm not busy with schoolwork (Argh! Exams is a month away!).
Well, I'm Singapore-born. (Anyone knows Singapore? We're a small dot country on Earth! But developed.) Anyway, I can speak fluent Chinese and English....and a bit of Cantonese and Teochew (Chinese Dialects). My standard of Japanese is errmmm.......Beginner level? (thanks to all those anime that I have watch)

i would love to be multi-lingual... of course i dont think i coudl ever spell anything in all those languages... much less learn all of them and not mix them up...XD... but its worth a shot... my life time project haha

It helps to be in a multicultural enviorement. I was born in a Spanish speaking country, then at 15 I moved to the States, where I of course, had to learn English. Thankfully I lived in Chile long enough not to lose my Spanish even though I hardly speak it. Now I just began taking Japanese in school, and I can pretty much hold a meaningful conversation and understand most of the anime I watch (since I studied intensively 2 years on my own), but I'm light years away from being truly fluent, I don't think I'll ever will be, but as long as I can understand about 90% and I can read somewhat, I'll be happy. Of course if I can find a Japanese related job after I graduate (to make my tuition worth while) I'll be triple happy^^
So far I can only speak 2 languages fluently. English and Malay.

English (native) and I used to be fluent in Danish, but haven't used it in over a decade so I find myself questioning how well I remember any of it and as a by-product, I found I could read Norwegian but spoke it with a Danish accent (go figure :D). In theory I should be able to understand Swedish, but when I lived in Denmark it just eluded me.
I know smatterings (some big some small) of Japanese, Spanish (thank you Sesame Street), German, French, Italian, Greek, Dutch, Aleut, Yupik and Flemish but I'd have to have some BIG TIME refreshers before I could be conversational. Maybe a phrase or two in Russian, but it's been a VERY long time and I was learning it through another language (Danish) which I was a beginner in at the time.
With some Asian languages rather than learning words I learned how they sound so that even though I didn't understand what was being said I had a good idea what language it was - I know... that sounds weird probably.

I can speak well in Chinese, English and Malay. Don't really like Malay.... but since it's the national language, it's compulsary to learn.... All my subjects in jr. and high school are taught in it, sigh..... Since I am chinese, I went to a chinese primary school when young. Knowing Chinese is good and all, but all the words are a pain to remember, not to mention the exams. I still suck at it. >.< Especially the caligraphy, never had much patience for it. I can speak in Cantonese as well, although it sounds weird. I also have a minor understanding of Japanese after watching so many animes.... Although, I don't really understand their grammar....

learning a new language is always a pain in the a$$ for me
Aw.. there's people able to fluently manage more then three languages I feel kinda ashamed now XD. I'm relatively good with english (learned by myself), and well I do know japanese too and spanish cuz well, spanish is my native language.
I'm planning on studying chinese next year, and trying to learn korean by myself. I like learning languages but sometimes my school weird schedule (horary?) doesn't let me take the language's courses I want :(.

English. American English. Believe me, they are different ^_^. French. Japanese. Disclaimer is I'm still studying the last one of those, but I'm cohesive enough to read novels and manga and watch anime without subs, so not too bad :) It's not as difficult a language to speak or even to read as people seem to think, so yay :)
I studied Spanish to A Level and German to GCSE also. So some vague knowledge of both of those remains. And a smattering of Welsh :)
That's me :)

I'm fluently in Dutch, French, German, English and Vietnamese and in 1 or 2 years I'm planning to go study in Asia :-) Got the permission from my parents to go study some extra languages (Korean and/or Japanese) abroad. Can't hardly wait.. but first I got to obtain my degree first. Else the motherload is going to close its doors :'(

Wow, so many amazing people. I've known a linguist from afar in my life. She spoke English, Spanish, Arabic, French... the list just went on and on.
I sturggle with languages, but my native tongue is English (American). I might be able to make it in Mexico for all of five minutes, and I'm trying to teach myself Japanese. Ha. My dream is to be fluent in Japanese, and then move on to Korean.
I haven't put too much work into it though... -ashamed-
Anyone know a good online resource for Japanese?

I can only speak two languages fluently. My first language was Spanish and then I learned English later on. Although I do know some Japanese words and phrases from reading manga and watching the animes of course!!

I speak english and spanish fluently though, i took french for 3 years im no good.
My native language is Scots English (och aye!) but my mum's Asian, and I grew up in a multicultural environment, so I'm naturally tri-lingual. I can speak English, French, German, Italian, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Punjabi, and Gibberish. I understand enough Japanese to not need subs for my anime (unless there's excessive use of jargon) but I'm far from fluent. I've also picked up smatterings of Latin, Greek, Spanish and Russian from school, with my proficiency mostly limited to reading and writing only. I also know the odd bits of Malay and Chinese but not enough to matter.

Pretty crazy how so many people aren't native english speakers - I can't even tell. Me, the only language I'm confident enough to say I can speak is, well, English. Insofar as reading goes though, I stumble my way through manga raws with the help of online dictionaries/translators. Kanji is so much easier to understand than chinese characters, mostly because of lovely, lovely furigana. It's always been a gripe of mine that if you don't know a chinese character, then you don't know it. Guessing won't take you anywhere at all, unless it's guessing from context and if you know enough chinese to do that it doesn't really matter anyways.
