I'm disappointed with the ending too... but most of time I find the series quite enjoyable :)

Bumping this up since I just finished watching it a few months ago.
I liked the ending because I didn't want it to end with Akizuki and the Chief falling in love and living happily ever after together. Not sure if I needed to spoiler tag that but just in case.
I was actually dreading that ending throughout the series because it seemed like the most likely progression for their relationship and sometimes I don't like it when I've figured out the story before it's even happened. I guess it also doesn't help that I wasn't too fond of the Chief.

Agree with you i also didn't wanted it to happen. Don't know if it's true but i heard somewhere that there should be a second season of Bakumatsu welll we will see. At the end we see that even Akizuki-sama can smile XD though i just thought somehow he looks kind of strange...

I'm currently watching the series, up to EP 4. I quite like it. Does anyone know any anime that's similar to this that's not Rurouni Kenshin, Peacemaker Kurogane, Samurai Champloo? I really like this time period of Japan.
eh... Samurai 7? Samurai Deeper Kyo? some other japan feudal period - type anime: Seirei no Moribito, Shura no Toki, Koutetsu Sangokushi, InuYasha...

Yep I second that... Seirei no Moribito is very good although it is not exactly considered feudal Japan but a fictional world that has Japan/Korean look to it. Lovely art, character design and development, story, OST and action! Don't miss it! It is a GEM in my opinion~
As for Koutetsu Sangokushi, well, it can get quite trippy/strange in terms of character design but it gets better/interesting/funny as the series goes along (if you don't mind the shounen-ai hints) :P If you gave it a chance, you may find yourself enjoying it hehe well I know I did :D

I'd totally watch if there was a 2nd season. And I agree about Akizuki smiling - I thought he looked a bit dorky but in a good, lovable way.
